Born to be Different

Updated: Feb 2, 2021

I am used to writing blog posts and articles for the various places I have worked for, but this is the first time I have sat down to write one just for myself.

I suppose it gives me a certain freedom to express, to focus on the areas I want to discuss without any restraints or expectations. But I also find the idea daunting. Without a guide of what to write, I feel naked.

What I choose to write is personal and I am inviting people into my world, to hear my thoughts. What do I write about? What if they don’t like it? What if they disagree?

I guess that is a challenge anyone who creates, faces. Whether you are an artist, a writer, a sculptor, producer, dressmaker, baker, the list is endless. You are creating something in the hope that others will enjoy what you are sharing with them. Sometimes it can feel like your soul is exposed, ready for the world to judge.

But isn’t that the beauty of being human? That we can all have an individual viewpoint. That we all have unique values and can see things with entirely differently to each other, because we have diverse experiences in life.

Just because one person likes something, it does not mean everyone has to like it. We would be a very boring world if we all thought the same way. Creativity would be limited as we would all enjoy the same art, the same music, the same food, why would we try and find new ways of doing things.

I think it is easy to forget this.

Each time I create an illustration, send work out on submission, enter a competition, wade through the rejections that come back, I keep this in mind. I learn, develop and keep trying.

So here I am, opening my blog posts. I think they will mostly be about books. Those that inspire me, the illustrations I adore, the creators behind them, publishers and the whole industry right down to the booksellers and librarians. I will also share my personal journey as I navigate this sector of my life.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy what I share. If you don’t, that’s ok as well.

We are born to be different.
