About me

Hi there.  Let me introduce myself.  My name is Hazel Murrell.

I love books and loved drawing, so illustrating was something that really appealed to me as I grew up.  In 2002 I graduated with a degree in Illustration for Children's Publishing and went to work in a variety of jobs, including the library, while developing my style and working on private commissions.

For 3 years I had the pleasure of setting up and running my own little Children's bookshop, where I learnt more about the book industry than I could ever imagine.

I was selected for the Longlist for the 2018 Undiscovered Voices, earning an Honorary Mention.  I have created and illustrated a number of books, including a series of personalised Christmas books and the 'Emily's Mysterious Adventues' series, written by author Paul Brown.

The Gizmo comic was started after inspired by my much-adored dog.  I had Gizmo from a puppy and she was loved by my parent's dog, Tess, and tolerated by my cat.  She became a bookshop dog and was a regular sight behind the till, with customers coming in just to see her (and sneak her sausages!).  It is fair to say she was well and truly spoilt and we loved her very much.  For years I have been doodling rough comics of her day-to-day adventures, and in January 2020 I started to turn these into a proper comic strip. Sadly in November 2020, we suddenly lost her to a quick illness and were left devastated.  It has taken me a while to face returning to the comic strip, but now I feel is the time to honour our special little dog by continuing with the comic.

I now work as a secondary school Librarian and spend the rest of my time illustrating from my studio at home in the Essex Countryside (with the help of my cat and husband).

I am a member of SCBWI and CILIP.
